Writers Edition Homage to Robert Louis Stevenson Limited Edition 8 Fountain Pen

Robert Louis Stevenson, born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1850, had two great desires: for freedom and for the distraction of immersion in another world He composed essays and travel accounts as well as his legendary adventure stories peopled with striking characters whose names send a shiver down the spines of readers around the world: Long John Silver, Captain Flint, Jekyll and Hyde. The Montblanc Writers Edition Homage to Robert Louis Stevenson is dedicated to this imaginative storyteller. The overall shape of this solid Au 750 yellow gold, rhodium-coated writing instrument resembles a historic, extendable spyglass – which sets the scene on the deck of the Hispaniola as she navigates the South Seas in search of the treasure hidden by the buccaneer John Flint. Around the top ring of the cap is the first line of the requiem Stevenson wrote for himself: "UNDER THE WIDE AND STARRY SKY". The lettering is mirror-inverted and recalls the theme of duality in Stevenson's novel "The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde". The yellow gold-coated clip imitates the shape of a belaying pin, to which the lines of rigging would be secured on a ship like the Hispaniola. In the novel, the fictional character and protagonist, Jim Hawkins, describes how the schooner sets sail with a handful of honourable men and two dozen sinister characters on board. Jim’s harrowing account of the mutiny and the struggle with the pirates to be the first to find the gold is immortalised on the solid Au 750 yellow gold, rhodium-coated cap artful hand engravings on different levels, including palm leaves, a solid gold coin and a stylised compass rose. An artistically crafted skull set with black sapphires is protruding eerily from the cap. The ship’s wooden planks inspired the structure of the hand-engraved solid Au 750 yellow gold, rhodium-coated barrel, on which the name Walrus is engraved while the cone is made from mahogany wood to resemble the giant tree under which the treasure was hidden. It is adorned with a red garnet. The Samoan island of Upola, Stevenson’s personal treasure, is featured as a cut-out on the barrel. Hidden in this recess are the geographical coordinates of Stevenson's house on the island. The Samoan title ‘Tusitala’, embossed on the handcrafted, solid Au 750 gold bicolor nib, means ‘teller of stories’ and was given to the great writer and world traveller by the Samoan people. The palm leaves framing the word signify Stevenson’s arrival at his adopted home and final resting place.
